Semillitas

"Our seeds are under attack!"

Said alone it raises no alarm to the average American citizen, either because he or she is neither a farmer or a worried citizen. I am an amateur farmer and a very worried citizen.

things started to fall into place when I noticed that swallowing watermelon seeds did not result in my belly growing a watermelon plant as my mom had warned me... so of course I noticed when the seeds in my favorite summer fruit went missing. "Sweet!" I thought, "no more worrying about a watermelon accidentally growing in my stomach!" (you never know right?) Sure the watermelon was more "convenient" in that I didn't have to spew the seeds, but the process was no less messy or sticky.

Then the seeds went missing in another fruit, grapes... "hmm..." I thought to myself, "someone finally made fruit for lazy people!" myself being one of them, a young kid who loved her junk food and hated having to wait to shove something sweet into her mouth.

All this was noticed but I made no big deal about it ... but now a lot older and wiser, how do you grow seedless watermelons and seedless grapes?

"The Future of Food"

In kindergarten I leared that beans sprout and grow and grow until they produce more beans (whether mine made it to adulthood is beside the point). the whole circle of life thing. but how did these plants become seedless?

it turns out it's not just watermelons or grapes that are becoming more "convenient", CORN, SOY BEANS, COTTON, CANOLA ... mostly here in the US, ALL GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS.

Now what does that mean? as a recovering junk food junkie (5 years!) it means that the quality (and control) of the fruits and veggies I love is in jeopardy. ...

this rabbit whole gets deeper ....

keep thinking,
